Introduction
In July 2006 the Resuscitation Council issued 'Standards for Clinical Practice and Training for Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals in Dental Practice'. This stated that ... Medical emergencies can happen at any time in dental practice. If you employ, manage or lead a team, you should make sure that:-
There are arrangements for at least two people available to deal with medical emergencies when treatment is planned to take place.
All members of staff, not just the registered team members, know their role if a patient collapses or there is another kind of medical emergency.
All members of staff who might be involved in dealing with a medical emergency are trained and prepared to deal with such an emergency at any time, and practise together regularly in a simulated emergency so they know exactly what to do.
-
Staff skills should be updated annually.
-
All clinical areas should have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED)

Course
The Course is delivered over a period of 3, 6, 12 or 18 hours dependant on the needs of the organisation … but read on … The Course can be delivered during the day, in the evening or at the weekend. We have no problems fitting in with existing work shift patterns and are happy to teach the course early morning, late evening or overnight if required! The 6 and 12 hour courses lead to the HSE Level 2 Emergency First Aid in the Workplace qualification whilst the 18 hour course leads to the HSE First Aid at Work qualification. The way in which the course is delivered and the materials used vary dependant on the nature of the group and their existing knowledge of first aid. The Course can be tailored to reflect your particular setting if delivered as a ‘closed’ course – that is solely to you or your employees. Individuals are welcome to join an ‘open’ course where participants will be drawn from a wide variety of different healthcare settings.Assessment
